Chico is a lively college town in Northern California, celebrated for its sunny weather, lush Bidwell Park, and a lively downtown filled with restaurants, nightlife, and year-round events. Whether you're coming to explore things to do in Butte County this weekend, sample Chico food, or book one of the popular Chico hotels, most travelers arrive via Sacramento International Airport (SMF) and complete U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) formalities there before the 90-minute drive north. U.S. immigration law applies uniformly, so entry procedures are identical to any mainland U.S. port of entry. Expect standard CBP questioning, biometric screening, and possible secondary inspection. Have your passport, visa or ESTA authorization, return ticket, and accommodation details (many visitors ask to stay downtown or near Chico State) readily available. After you clear federal inspection, no further immigration checks occur within California, leaving you free to head straight to Chico hotels, catch Chico events, or enjoy Bidwell Park.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Chico follows standard U.S. visa policy. Citizens of 41 Visa-Waiver countries may enter visa-free; others need an approved ESTA, B-1/B-2 visa, or corresponding U.S. visa category.

How to Apply: Complete DS-160 form, pay MRV fee, schedule embassy interview; processing varies by post

A visa does not guarantee entry; final determination made at port of entry.

Have hotel name plus first nights' booking confirmation ready; many travelers ask for downtown Chico hotels or spots near restaurants and nightlife.
Keep alcohol within duty-free limits if you plan to enjoy Chico nightlife; excess bottles may be taxed.
Download the Mobile Passport Control app to shorten lines at SMF if you are a U.S./Canadian citizen.

U.S. customs allowances are federal and therefore identical in Chico as anywhere in the United States. Declare items honestly to avoid fines.
